Kitchen Refacing
What is kitchen refacing, its benefits and negative aspects?
Kitchen refacing means replacing everything "visible to a naked eye", which includes: doors, panels, fillers, toe kicks, handles, and countertop if needed.
1) Benefits of refacing your kitchen instead of demolishing and building brand new:
The biggest aspect is cost. Finishing materials for the kitchen usually cost around 70% compared to the price of new cabinets with doors, however by choosing to reface the kitchen you save by eliminating points below:
a. no need to demolish old cabinets/countertop/tile and pay for the disposal/demo
b. no need to replace the countertop (unless you want to)
c. no need to replace backsplash tiles, move the electrical points or change under cabinet lights
d. no need to hire a plumber to replace the sink or connect/reconnect the dishwasher
e. no need to repaint walls or floor tiles as the layout does not change
f. no need for an engineer or designer as you only need to choose the finishing materials
2) Time efficient:
The kitchen refacing process usually is 2-3 faster than building a new kitchen.
You can use your old kitchen from the day of the consultation until the installation day, compared to the full kitchen reno where you have to cook or eat in the basement or elsewhere for a couple of weeks or months as everything is in the process.
We would only disturb your kitchen habits for 1-3 days during the installation. Small and medium-sized kitchen refacing could be installed in only 1 day. If you live in a condo, you can avoid most of the headaches of dealing with the management, continuous elevator bookings, and neighbor complaints that usually pop out during an extended renovation.
Negative aspects:
Framed style kitchens are not suitable for refacing(90% of the cases)as usually frame is either glued/nailed to the general construction of the box which does not allow to replace it.
The framed kitchen can be repainted and we can direct you to one of our painting subcontractors.
If your old kitchen cabinets are poorly installed the refacing would not fix the issue - we cannot install the doors perfectly aligned if your old boxes are out of square or out of horizontal/vertical level by more than 1/4. During the consultation, we would verify and let you know if anything can influence the look of the final product
Refacing is cost-effective as mentioned at the begging of this poem if you compare it to the full kitchen replacement but if you are looking for the cheapest option available on the market -this is not the one. Generally speaking, refacing can cost somewhere from $7000 to $ 25000 and there is no limit depending on the material you choose. We do not use low-quality materials such as foil wrap,PVS etc as in our opinion it is garbage that would fall apart in a couple of years.
If you need the cheapest option available on the market - here is the list of what you can do:- visit IKEA as it is the cheapest option and assemble it yourself to save on installation.
- visit Alibaba or other stores that offer cheap imported cabinets.
- find a local cabinetmaker who provides finished materials in foil wrap,PVS, etc., you would save about 35% but you may regret it in 2-5years.
Modern Kitchen Cabinetry
Modern kitchen usually includes flat style doors without the crown molding at the top and light valance under the cabinets, no trims that were used for the past 50years to hide any imperfections. We try to remove the bulkiness and add more straight clean lines to the flat surface. In terms of hardware, a modern kitchen can be loaded with special accessories such as pull-up doors, magic corners, push-open drawers, and many more.
Materials:
1) Flat painted MDF doors in any desired color(high/semi-gloss, matte)
2) Acrylic laminate doors in multiple colors (high gloss/matte)
Those two material types are used in 95% of modern kitchens however there are many other options on the market that can suit any of your desires such as (eco-friendly,scratch-resistant,anti-fingerprint, veneer finish, nanotech matt material,poly-glass
Traditional / Transitional Kitchen Cabinetry
Traditional and Transitional styles are similar but have some differences.
1)With the Traditional kitchen, we are not talking about our grand-grand parent's kitchen style from 1900 but it incorporates some of those elements that are now popular with the traditional style kitchen nowadays such as:
-Detailed big crown molding
-Detailed light valance under the cabinet
-Doors and panels with lots of details, raised /bulky profiles
-Trims on the bottom of the cabinetry
-Classic color
-Detailed bulky hood cabinetry
- Hand-carved detailed thick columns around the island, etc
2) On another hand Transitional style is a mix of both Modern and Traditional
Transitional kitchen style is the most popular style preferred in Canada at this type as it incorporates some great details from the traditional style and modern style. That's why if you would like to sell the house in the future and don't know the buyer's preferences or the future trends then this might be the best option.
This type of kitchen style is flexible and may be customized in a lot of different ways.
Transitional style often includes:
-Doors in simple profile(single step like shaker or similar)
-Simple crown molding or a single/double step flat filler that resembles a crown.
-Flat light valance or flat panel under the cabinet and no trim on the bottom
Floating shelves could be added. The top and bottom doors can be finished in a different color for contrast and many more.
